Smuutti Oy is a software consulting company from Espoo, Finland, run by Tuomas Lehtonen, a hands-on software architect with over 17 years of experience designing, building and running software, from the first sketch to production. I get things done and keep projects moving, even when the specs are still taking shape.
Full-stack development
Web applications end to end: data model, backend, APIs and user interface. TypeScript, Angular, React, Vue.js, Node.js, Java, Scala, PHP, .NET, Python and Go.
AWS cloud & DevOps
Cloud architecture and infrastructure as code with AWS CDK and Terraform. Microservices on ECS and AWS cost optimisation, such as services that start and stop automatically based on demand. CI/CD pipelines on GitHub and Bitbucket, Docker, Linux servers, and keeping the lights on once it is live.
Security
I take security seriously and follow the field continuously. Security is part of the design from day one: least-privilege access, secrets kept out of code, dependencies kept up to date and infrastructure defined as reviewable code.
Software architecture & technical leadership
System design and modelling, technology choices and leading development teams. I have worked as the architect and team lead on several products, from greenfield start to long-term development.
Integrations
Connecting systems so data flows where it is needed: APIs, data imports and exports, messaging (MQTT) and integrations between business systems such as product information management, e-commerce and reporting.
Data, analytics & BI tools
SQL and NoSQL data modelling, caching and search with PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis and ElasticSearch. Custom BI and reporting tools with charts and dashboards built from scratch (I co-founded and architected Piwoot Reports, a cloud-based data collection and BI tool). End-to-end analytics for SaaS products: ETL, charts and dashboards in Apache Superset, embedded directly into the product.
AI solutions
Generative AI built into real products, not just demos: for example, I designed and implemented a generative AI feature for the Renta Modules planning tool that drafts the construction site module plan. I also use AI-assisted development in my daily work to deliver faster without cutting corners on quality.
3D & interactive web
Real-time 3D in the browser with BabylonJS and WebVR, such as the 3D site planner in Renta Modules, and Blender automation with Python.
Extra: devices, design & digital fabrication
From idea to a physical object: parts, devices and furniture designed in CAD, then built with electronics, 3D printing, laser cutting and engraving, and CNC routing. For example:
- A prototype NFC reader device for tracking working hours
- An electric height-adjustable workstation with a sliding drawer for a piano keyboard and a flip-up desktop for the monitor

End-to-end analytics for a SaaS application: ETL and data modelling, charts and dashboards in Apache Superset, and embedding them directly into the customer's app. Also enhanced the customer's AWS infrastructure with Terraform.

Renta Modules 2018 – present
Architect, team lead, full-stack development · Piwoot Oy, Smuutti Oy
A planning tool for construction site modules, with 3D and WebVR planning in the browser. I also designed and implemented a generative AI feature that drafts the site plan for the modules, and services that turn the 3D models into 2D drawings for building permit documents (SVG, DXF and PDF).
Microservice backend on AWS, with cost optimisation that keeps the GPU instances running only when needed.
